Why line shopping is the cheapest edge available

Books do not post identical numbers. On any given night the same team might be -140 at one book and -152 at another, and taking the worse side of that gap costs you roughly two percent of your stake on every bet you place. Over a season that is larger than most people's entire edge.

The gaps are widest on the markets books pay the least attention to. Main-market moneylines get corrected quickly because they take the most money. Strikeout props and home run odds move more slowly and disagree more, which is where the largest differences tend to sit.

Line shopping requires no opinion about the game. You have already decided what you want to bet. Shopping only changes the price you pay for it, which is why it is the one improvement available to every bettor regardless of how good their handicapping is.

Reading disagreement between books

A large gap between books is sometimes a stale number and sometimes information. If three books have moved and one has not, that fourth number is usually about to move, and it is worth taking before it does.

Be careful assuming the outlier is wrong. Books that consistently post different numbers on a market often do so because they take a different kind of action, not because they are slow.

First 5 innings and NRFI lines

First 5 innings lines isolate the starters and remove the bullpen, which is useful when you have a strong opinion on the starters but not the relievers. The gaps between books tend to be wider on first 5 innings totals because the market is thinner, so there is more to shop for.

The 1st inning total is always 0.5 and is labelled YRFI for the over and NRFI for the under. You are shopping whether a run scores in the first frame across all four books, and because it is a binary market the hold matters more than on a full game total.
