Why half a point on an NFL spread matters
NFL margins pile up on 3 and 7 because scores are built from field goals and touchdowns. A spread sitting on 3 or 7 is the difference between a push and a loss, or a win and a push, far more often than a spread sitting on any other number. Buying a half point off 3 or 7 is worth more than the same half point off 4 or 10.
That is why line shopping on NFL spreads is not just about price. Moving from -3 to -2.5 is a different bet, not the same bet at a different price. The consensus line column shows you which books are on the same number, so you are never comparing -2.5 to -4 and calling the gap an edge.
How the no-vig fair price is computed
For each side we find the consensus line, which is the spread or total posted by the most books. We convert each book's American odds at that line to an implied probability, average them, and normalise the two sides so they sum to 100 percent. The result is the no-vig fair price, which is what the market thinks the true probability is once the vig is removed.
The edge percentage in the Best column is the gap between that fair price and the best available price at the consensus line. A book on a different line still shows in its column with an amber asterisk, but it never counts as best or worst and never feeds the fair value or the hold.
