NFL receiver splits against man and zone coverage

How each receiver performs when the defence plays man versus when it plays zone. Targets, the share of those targets that came against zone, yards per target in each look, and the gap between the two.

Why the man and zone split matters

Receivers are not equally good against both looks, and the difference is often large enough to swing a weekly projection more than the opponent's overall pass defence rank does. Separation wins against man. Finding the soft spot and sitting in it wins against zone. Those are different skills and plenty of receivers only have one.

The split is most actionable when a defence is heavily committed to one coverage. Some teams play zone on well over two thirds of snaps, and a receiver who struggles against zone facing that defence is a fade even in a game with a high total.

Volume can also shift by coverage. Zone-heavy defences tend to concede short completions, which raises the target count for underneath receivers and backs while capping the depth of those targets. That helps a PPR floor and hurts a tournament ceiling.

Applying it week to week

Start from the defence. Identify which coverage the upcoming opponent plays most, then look for receivers with a large edge in that look. That combination is more reliable than any single receiver-versus-cornerback matchup, because coverage rate is stable and individual assignment often is not.

Use a minimum target threshold before trusting a split. A receiver with fifteen targets against man has not shown you anything yet, and small-sample splits are the easiest way to talk yourself into a bad start.

Frequently asked questions

What is zone target rate?

The share of a receiver's targets that came while the defence was in zone coverage.

What is a meaningful split?

A gap of more than about two yards per target between man and zone, on a reasonable sample, is worth acting on.

How many targets before a split is reliable?

Around 40 total targets is a sensible floor. Below that the split moves too much on single games.

Which receivers benefit most from zone?

Receivers who work underneath and find soft spots. Pure separation athletes usually post their better numbers against man.

Is the coverage splits tool free?
