NFL personnel grouping usage by player
How each player's role changes between regular and jumbo personnel. Routes, targets and carries are split by grouping, so you can see who stays on the field when an offence adds a blocker and who comes off.
Why personnel usage predicts role changes
Personnel is the clearest signal of how a coaching staff actually values a player, and it moves before the box score does. A receiver whose route share in base personnel is climbing week over week is on his way to a larger role whether or not the targets have arrived yet.
It also explains production that looks inexplicable. A tight end who only plays in heavy sets is capped no matter how good he is, because those sets run the ball. A back who never sees the field in obvious passing situations has a ceiling that no amount of talent gets him past.
The most valuable players in fantasy are the ones who do not leave the field. Full-time players absorb whatever the game script turns into, which is why a three-down back on a bad offence often outscores a two-down back on a good one.
Where to use it
In season long, personnel usage is an early-warning system. Role changes show up here weeks before they show up in fantasy points, which is the window where you can still buy a player at his old price.
In DFS, it is the fastest way to check whether a cheap player is actually in line for volume or just cheap. A minimum salary player who is on the field for most of his team's snaps is a very different bet from one who plays a third of them.
Frequently asked questions
What is 11 personnel?
One running back and one tight end with three receivers. It is the most common grouping in the modern NFL and it is the most pass-heavy.
What is 12 personnel?
One running back and two tight ends with two receivers. It generally runs more and throws less.
Why does personnel matter for fantasy?
It determines who is on the field in the situations that produce fantasy points. A player who leaves the field on passing downs has a hard ceiling.
How quickly do personnel trends change?
Faster than production does, which is what makes them useful. Role shifts usually appear here before they appear in the box score.
