Edge is the expected 5v5 xG share for the line against its likely opponents, minus 50. Plus 3 means the line should win about 53 percent of the expected goals.
What the NHL line matchups page shows
Every game on tonight's slate gets one card. Each card lists the projected forward lines and defense pairs for both teams with DraftKings salary, projected ice time and projected fantasy points for each player.
Under each line you see its 5v5 on-ice results per 60 minutes when those players are on the ice together: shot attempts (CF and CA), shots (SF and SA), high danger chances (HDCF and HDCA), expected goals (xGF and xGA) and goals.
The sample line tells you how much time the line has played together. A full line needs 50 minutes together. When a new line has less, the page uses the two forwards with the most time together. When no pair has 50 minutes, the stats show N/A instead of a noisy number.
How the expected matchup works
The home coach gets the last change, so the home team picks which of its lines faces each opposing line. The page measures how each team deploys its lines at home and on the road, then combines the two teams into an expected share of 5v5 time against each opposing line.
A label such as 70% vs WPG1/2 means the line should spend about 70 percent of its 5v5 time against the opponent's first and second lines.
How to use line matchups for NHL DFS
A line that scores well at 5v5 and draws a weak defensive line has a better chance to produce the correlated points a GPP stack needs. The edge number puts this in one value: it is the line's expected share of 5v5 expected goals against its likely opponents, minus 50.
Use the edge with the projections and the power play units. A second line with an edge and a cheap salary is a common way to stack a strong team without the ownership of its first line.
The table under each card shows the power play, penalty kill and 5v5 rates for both teams. A strong power play against a weak penalty kill adds value to the PP1 stack of that team.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the line stats come from?
From the official NHL shift charts and play-by-play. Each shot attempt is matched to the skaters on the ice at that second, and expected goals come from the BankrollSZN shot location model.
What is a high danger chance?
An unblocked shot from the inner slot within 20 feet of the goal line, or a rebound shot from the slot.
How often does the page update?
Lines and projections refresh every 30 minutes on game days. The on-ice stats update twice a day after games finish.
