WNBA matchup analysis
Pace, defensive performance by position, and team trends for tonight's slate, so you can identify which games project to produce the most fantasy points before looking at any individual player.
Why pace matters more in a short league
Pace sets the number of possessions, and possessions are the raw material for every counting statistic. A fast game hands both teams extra shots, rebounds and assists for free, which is why game environment should be the first filter on a slate rather than an afterthought.
The WNBA schedule is short enough that pace and defensive numbers stabilise on smaller samples than people are used to from the NBA, but it also means a couple of unusual games move a team's season numbers noticeably. Read the recent trend next to the season figure rather than either alone.
Small slates amplify all of this. With only a handful of games, one high-pace matchup can contain most of the viable plays on the board, and correlation between players in that game matters far more than it would on a twelve game slate.
Defence by position, carefully
Positional defensive numbers are useful but need a sanity check on schedule. A team can look soft against guards because it has faced the best guards in the league, which is a fact about its opponents rather than about its defence.
The more reliable signal is structural: whether a team forces turnovers, whether it defends the three point line, and whether it rebounds. Those describe how a team plays rather than who it happened to play.
Frequently asked questions
What is pace?
Possessions per game. It determines how many total opportunities exist for both teams.
Why check pace before players?
It sets the ceiling on the whole game. A slow matchup caps everyone in it regardless of individual talent.
Is defence versus position reliable in the WNBA?
Useful with a schedule check. Short seasons mean opponent quality skews the numbers more than it would over 82 games.
Does correlation matter on small slates?
Yes, more than on large ones. With few games, the players in the best matchup make up most of the viable pool.
Is the matchup tool free?
Yes, with a free account.
