How the WNBA projections are built

Minutes first. In a league with short rotations and frequent rest days, projected minutes explains more of the outcome than any per-minute rate does, so the model starts by estimating each player's workload from recent rotation patterns, the current injury and inactive list, and how the coach has actually distributed minutes rather than how the depth chart says he should.

From there, per-minute production adjusted for the opponent. Pace sets the number of possessions available, and defensive efficiency by position sets how many of them turn into points. A high-usage guard facing a slow, strong defense projects very differently from the same player against a fast, leaky one.

Usage redistribution is the last piece and often the largest single edge on a WNBA slate. When a starter sits, her shots do not vanish, they move, and they rarely move evenly. The model reallocates usage to the specific teammates who have absorbed it before rather than spreading it across the roster.

Why WNBA slates reward research more than NBA slates

Slates are small. Four games means roughly 50 rostered players, so a single late inactive moves projected ownership on a scale that never happens in a twelve-game NBA slate. The upside is that the news you catch is worth far more, and the field is smaller and slower to react.
