Weather to Watch
Athletics at Chicago Cubs | Wrigley Field | Overcast, 85F | Wind: 13 mph SSW
The swing game on the board. Thirteen out of the south is the classic Wrigley jet stream, and the park profile lines up huge. Pull-side air on both sides, and I'm letting that drive my stack picks rather than fighting it.
Toronto Blue Jays at Atlanta Braves | Truist Park | Clear, 83F | Wind: 7 mph ESE
A crosswind that does not push the ball much either way. Hot air helps the ball carry a touch, but Truist is a normal park tonight. I'd call it neutral.
Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins | Target Field | Overcast, 84F | Wind: 11 mph SW
Eleven miles per hour blowing toward left center is enough to matter at Target. Right-handed pull bats get the friendliest version of this park tonight. I'd take that swing.
Two domes today: Chase Field and Daikin Park. Park factor lives, weather does not.
HR Calls
Three picks I trust at three different price points. The anchor sits in the best pure matchup, the mid-tier rides the Wrigley wind, and the salary saver is the leverage piece I'd build last.
Byron Buxton (MIN) $5,900 vs Seth Lugo
Buxton has the most violent right-handed swing on the slate against righties, and I'm betting Lugo is the guy who catches the bill tonight. Lugo's xFIP sits more than a third of a run above his ERA, his BABIP is .266 against him, and the LOB rate is up around 79%. That is the textbook regression profile. Now drop him into Target Field with 11 mph blowing toward left center and Buxton's pull-side power as the trigger. The price is right for what should be the highest-ceiling right-handed bat tonight.
Pete Crow-Armstrong (CHC) $4,700 vs J.T. Ginn
Crow-Armstrong leads off for the highest-implied team on the slate, which is the simplest math you can run on a Wrigley wind-out night. Ginn has a 5.09 ERA on the road this year, a 1.70 HR/9 mark, and a walk rate near 3.10 BB/9 that puts him in plenty of hitter counts. PCA is left-handed pulling into the prevailing wind. Salary has not caught up to the spot, and he is my favorite mid-tier ceiling bat.
Colby Thomas (ATH) $3,200 vs Shota Imanaga
Leverage piece. Imanaga has been the same homer-prone arm over his last 10 starts, with a 1.67 HR/9 and a 14.7% HR/FB, and his platoon split skews backwards so right-handers get the worst of him. Thomas hits third, owns a .269 ISO over his last 30 days, and gets the Wrigley wind out at the cheapest price you can pay for it. You probably aren't rostering him, which is the reason I am.
Stacks to Target
Wrigley is the headline. Three stacks here cover the highest-implied team, the best leverage stack, and a dome team that gets to skip the wind question entirely.
1. CHC vs J.T. Ginn (R) | Implied Total: 5.52 | ROO Score: 5.1/10
The Cubs sit at 5.52 on the implied board, which is the top mark on the slate and a full half-run clear of the next team. Ginn is the kind of arm I love to attack: 5.09 ERA, 1.70 HR/9, 3.10 BB/9 on the road. He pitches to contact and his command issues mean fastballs over the middle of the plate are routine. The Cubs roll out a balanced lineup with all three bat sides covered, so the Wrigley wind blowing 13 mph to the south plays for every hitter in their order. The Athletics bullpen behind Ginn has a poor xFIP against both sides too, so if Ginn gets pulled early, the spot does not get any safer for them.
Core pieces: Pete Crow-Armstrong $4,700 (L), Michael Busch $4,400 (L), Ian Happ $4,000 (S), Seiya Suzuki $4,600 (R), Nico Hoerner $4,200 (R)
2. ATH vs Shota Imanaga (L) | Implied Total: 4.48 | ROO Score: 4.9/10
Best leverage stack on the board. He has given up 1.67 HR/9 with a 14.7% HR/FB rate and his xFIP sits at 3.81. The Athletics lineup is almost entirely right-handed, which lines up into the side Imanaga has struggled with all season. Add the same Wrigley wind out and pull-side air, and you have the cleanest contrarian build on the slate. The Cubs bullpen has been below average in xFIP, so if Imanaga gets chased, it does not improve. I'd take that swing.
Core pieces: Shea Langeliers $5,100 (R), Nick Kurtz $5,300 (L), Brent Rooker $4,400 (R), Colby Thomas $3,200 (R), Zack Gelof $3,800 (R)
3. LAD vs Ryne Nelson (R) | Implied Total: 5.03 | ROO Score: 5.2/10
Nelson is one of the worst starters on the slate by xFIP, sitting at 4.89 with a 2.07 HR/9 mark. The Diamondbacks bullpen has bled runs against left-handers all year, so the back of this stack stays alive even after Nelson exits. Chase Field is a dome, so weather is off the board, but the platoon edge plus pitcher quality is enough to lean here. This is a balanced stack with both the chalk corner (Pages, Freeman) and the off-the-run prices (Tucker, Muncy) playable together.
Core pieces: Andy Pages $5,500 (R), Freddie Freeman $5,000 (L), Mookie Betts $4,400 (R), Kyle Tucker $4,800 (L), Max Muncy $4,500 (L)
Pitchers
Clean SP board tonight, one obvious cash anchor and a tier of GPP plays underneath. K-rate over ERA is the lean because the bullpens behind several of these arms are shaky, and strikeouts are the only thing you can bank on.
Chris Sale (ATL) vs TOR | $10,500 | CASH
Sale is the obvious top-tier play. He has a 2.59 ERA, 2.99 xFIP, and an 11.86 K/9, and the Blue Jays roll out the lowest implied total on the slate at 2.65. Toronto is throwing a bullpen game with an opener, which tells you what they think of their chances. Cash builds run through him without much debate.
Justin Wrobleski (LAD) at ARI | $8,200 | CASH
Wrobleski has a 2.87 xFIP with 10.33 K/9 and walks under 6% of hitters. The Diamondbacks are implied for under 4 runs in their own dome, and that combination at this salary is the second-best pure cash play on the board. I trust the strikeout profile more than the ERA, which is running low because the start sample is thin.
Kai-Wei Teng (HOU) vs PIT | $6,500 | GPP
Strikeouts on strikeouts. Teng is missing bats at a 12.02 K/9 pace and gets the Pirates in a dome where weather is off the board. The walk rate is the issue at 5.24 BB/9, but for a GPP swing at this price, the K ceiling is what I'm paying for.
Andrew Morris (MIN) vs KC | $4,000 | GPP
The punt-priced GPP arm I lean on to fit two anchors. Morris is at the minimum, owns an 8.22 K/9, and the Royals lineup mixes lefties and righties so neither side runs away with a platoon edge. He is not safe, but he is cheap, and that is the whole point.
Shota Imanaga (CHC) vs ATH | $8,500 | GPP
Contrarian GPP swing only. Imanaga has the K rate to pay you off in any park, but starting him at Wrigley with the wind out and against a heavy right-handed lineup is the spot where his HR profile burns you. If you fade him in lineups that stack ATH, you double-stack the leverage angle.
Pitcher Regression to Watch
Sample sizes are getting meaningful, but plenty of starters are still riding fluky surface lines. I trust xFIP over ERA with a BABIP check, and tonight there is one arm in particular due for the other side of variance.
Seth Lugo (KC), Negative Regression Candidate
Lugo has a 4.16 ERA, but his xFIP sits at 4.53 with a .266 BABIP and a left-on-base rate up at 79%. That is two separate luck markers pointing the same direction, and the ERA has been hiding a 1.67 HR/9 problem all year. Minnesota is the lineup standing in tonight, and Target Field with 11 mph blowing to left center is the wrong park for a fly-ball arm running this hot. The Twins are my regression beneficiary here, and Buxton at the top of that order is the cleanest way to leverage it.
Justin Wrobleski (LAD), Positive Regression Candidate
Wrobleski owns a 4.35 ERA, but his xFIP is sitting all the way down at 2.87 with a .332 BABIP and a 67% LOB rate. He is striking out more than a hitter per inning with elite walk rate, and the surface ERA does not reflect any of it. Tonight he is pitching in a dome against the lowest-implied team on the slate. If you want a one-off cheap pitcher to pair with Sale, this is the spot, and it strengthens my LAD stack lean by removing a runs-back risk on the other side.
Final Thoughts
Cash builds run through Sale plus Wrobleski at the top, a Buxton anchor in the MIN four-stack to leverage the Lugo regression call, and Crow-Armstrong as the contact-skill bat at $4,700. From there I drop down to Colby Thomas or Ian Happ to get under the cap with another Wrigley bat. The Athletics-Cubs game total of 10.0 with the wind out is the cleanest cash environment for hitters tonight, and Buxton is the single most valuable salary-to-ceiling spot at his number.
Watch list pre-lock is the usual thing. Rosters are still just projected and not confirmed for several of the bigger spots, and Buxton in particular has been an in-and-out lineup name all year, so lineup confirmations from Minnesota are the one to check at the wire. Wrigley wind reading is the second thing to glance at near lock since a shift back to crosswind would soften the entire CHC and ATH thesis.
GPP leverage tonight starts with the Athletics stack. Imanaga is a top-three name on the slate, so anyone running ATH bats against him is getting paid in ownership terms when Wrigley plays the way the park profile says it should. From there, I'd take a one-off Colby Thomas at $3,200 or a Henry Bolte at $3,100 in single-entry builds as the bring-back pieces. The 4-3 lean between CHC and ATH is my favorite ceiling combination on the board.
