League average: 101.3 possessions per 48 minutes, 231.2 combined points per game. Pace rating = half season, half last 10 games (last season's pace until this season starts). Up in pace = 2 or more possessions above the league average. Slow = 2 or more below.
What NBA pace measures
Pace is the number of possessions a team uses in 48 minutes. More possessions mean more shots, rebounds, assists and fantasy points for every player in the game, so pace is one of the first filters for an NBA DFS slate, a player prop or a game total.
We count possessions from the box score: field goal attempts, minus offensive rebounds, plus turnovers, plus 0.44 times free throw attempts. We average both teams and scale each game to 48 minutes, so an overtime game does not make a team look faster than it is.
How the projected pace is built
Each team gets a pace rating from its season average and its last 10 games, half and half. A game's projection starts at the league average and adds how far each team is above or below it. Early in the season, when a team has few games, its rating leans on last season's pace, pulled 40 percent back to the league average.
We tested the method game by game on the 2025-26 regular season without letting it see the games it graded. It missed by 3.35 possessions on average, against 4.08 for a plain league average guess. Games it projected in the top fifth averaged 105.1 actual possessions, and games in the bottom fifth averaged 97.1.
How to use pace for NBA DFS and betting
Start with the Up in pace games for game stacks and for value plays who need volume. A Slow game with a high total is a game where the points come from efficient offense, not extra possessions, so lean on the stars over the role players. A fast projection with a low total is a game the market may be underrating for volume.
Pace is a team stat, so check it against minutes. Use the NBA rotations tracker and the injury report to see who gets the extra possessions when a starter sits.
