PGA strokes gained stats
Strokes gained is the standard measure of how a golfer performs relative to the field average from every position on the course. This page breaks it down by category for every PGA Tour player: total, tee to green, off the tee, approach, around the green and putting.
How to read strokes gained for DFS
Total strokes gained per round is the single best predictor of who will contend, but the category breakdown tells you why. A player gaining strokes on approach is more reliable week to week than a player gaining the same amount on the greens, because putting regresses harder and faster.
Use the tournament tab to see how a player gains strokes at a specific event, and the course tab to see how he plays a specific venue. A player who gains strokes at this week's course is a better fit than a player with a higher season total who has never played it well.
The season tab ranks every player by total strokes gained and by each category, with measured rounds, scoring average and birdie or better rate. Sort by approach to find the best ball strikers, or by putting to find the hot putters who could regress.
When to trust strokes gained and when not to
Strokes gained on a small number of rounds is noisy. A player who gains four strokes on the greens in one week is not suddenly the best putter on tour. Trust the long term categories and treat short term spikes as a question, not an answer.
Course fit matters more than season strokes gained at venues with extreme characteristics. A long hitter gains more at a course where distance is rewarded, and a great approach player gains more at a course that demands precision into firm greens.
