What a target is
A target is a defense plus a kind of player. For example, Orlando against players who run isolation on 12% or more of their possessions. We find every game this season where a player like that faced Orlando and compare his stats that night with his own season average.
If those players beat their own averages most nights, the defense has a hole you can use. Save the target and this page lists the players who fit it every time that team plays.
How the backtest works
Each game is graded against that player's own season average, so a star and a role player count the same way. The delta is the average gain or loss per game. Hit rate is the share of games above his own average. A sample under about 40 player-games is noise.
NBA play types and shot zones come from the league's tracking data. NFL uses target share, air yards share and carry share. NHL uses ice time, power play time and shots. MLB uses hitter traits such as ISO, K rate and handedness against a team's pitching.
Use it from your AI
Connect BankrollSZN to Claude or ChatGPT and ask a question such as: backtest what players do best against the Orlando defense. The AI runs the backtest, and you can tell it to save the target. Saved targets show here and through the connector.
