What the shapes mean
Size is value per game: player value from the NBA Player Index scaled by minutes, with a smaller weight on defense. The size scale is the same for all 30 teams. Color is the tier: top tier, offense first, role player. Defense is estimated from steals, blocks, defensive rebounds and plus-minus, ranked against the same position group. It does not see off-ball or matchup defense.
What is a Wyman diagram
A Wyman diagram draws an NBA roster as shapes inside a box. The shape tells you what kind of player he is. The size tells you how much value he brings. The idea and the shape system come from the creator Taylormetrics, who draws one team at a time by hand.
This page builds the same kind of diagram for all 30 teams from data, so every roster uses the same rules and the same size scale. It updates every day during the season.
How a player gets his shape
The 55 players with the highest player value are the stars. A square is an ideal star, a hexagon is a star who passes more than he scores, and an octagon is a star with a caveat. Star scorers who do not defend become a circle or a triangle.
High usage players outside the top 55 who also defend get a square or a hexagon at a smaller size. The rest get an offense first shape: circle, triangle or diamond. Everyone else gets a role player shape from his shooting, defense and position: 3 and D, flawed 3 and D, good defense with limited offense, defensive big, productive big or spot-up shooter.
The stats come from the 2025-26 regular season and every 2026-27 game, with this season's games counted double.
Frequently asked questions
Who created the NBA roster shapes idea?
The shape system and the Wyman diagram format come from the creator Taylormetrics. BankrollSZN builds the diagrams from data with its own rules.
How often do the roster shapes update?
Every day during the NBA season, after the previous night's box scores load.
Why is the defense called estimated?
Public box scores do not track off-ball or matchup defense. The defense grade uses steals, blocks, defensive rebounds and plus-minus per 36 minutes, ranked against the same position group.
Why are the shapes different sizes?
Size is value per game: player value from the NBA Player Index scaled by minutes, with a smaller weight on defense. All 30 teams share one size scale, so a big shape on one team means the same as a big shape on another.
