What makes LoL DFS different

Series format is the first thing to check, because it changes everything about a slate. In a best of three, a player on a team that wins in two games has far fewer opportunities than one whose series goes the distance, so game count expectation matters as much as talent.

Team strength drives individual scoring harder than in traditional sports. Winning teams accumulate kills and objectives while losing teams do not, so backing players on teams likely to win is far more reliable than backing a good player on a weak team. There is much less scope for an individual to score well in a loss.

Role determines the shape of the scoring. Carry positions get the kills, supports get assists, and creep score is concentrated in the lanes. DraftKings scoring rewards those differently, which is why a strong support and a strong carry are not comparable on raw fantasy points.

Stacking and correlation

Correlation is stronger in League than in almost any other DFS sport. Kills and assists are shared within a team by definition, so when one player on a roster scores well his teammates usually do too. That makes stacking the natural way to build a tournament lineup.

The mirror of that is that spreading across many teams tends to produce mediocre scores. A lineup with one player from each of six teams is close to guaranteed to have several players on losing sides, and losing sides do not accumulate points.
